I just got back from Quebec City, so I missed a day. Here’s two to make up for it, starting with this strangely-badged wagon. Doesn’t quite pass the smell test...
I’m sure this one is just one of those things that everyone has noticed but me... I had no idea mirrors folded this way. Why?
Anyhoo, once I get myself back together after it’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming.

They fold that way to avoid the mirrors getting damaged by careless drivers and passers by. Many luxury cars have their mirror motorized and can be programmed to do this automatically when parked. In Europe this is common on more plebian cars as well because of the tighter confines of roads and parking lots there.

I think he was referring more to the direction and angle it was folding, rather than the fact it was folding in at all.

It may be on an angle like this rather than a horizontal pivot to fold in closer to the car, whereas the fixed portion of a horizontal pivot might stick out further. It may also be dictated by the aesthetics of the mirror where a simple horizontal pivot might not work with the design of the mirror.
TL;DR - I dunno.

Indeed, and I have an e46 and the mirrors don’t go up like that. They go... laterally? Horizontally? Normally?

My E46 mirrors fold up just like the ones shown in the photos.
